Hello. In regard to your questions about that I've some
experience. Our main font repository is on a nfs server a couple of
routers away, this lead to abysimal performance when stating looking
for fonts ofcourse. The only solution I found was to REMOVE all paths
except "." in paths.h.in and relie entierly on the ls-R database for
finding files (verify that you managed to minimize stating with
trace(1)). This helped performance _much_. Ofcourse this was some time
back when kpathsea 1.7 was current, I belive that later kpathsea
versions has a method of prefinxing path elements not to be stat'ed
with %%. I've also wirtten a perl script to generate a better ls-R
file than 'ls -R' does, it was posted on this list in late spring this
year I belive (or contact me).
Oh yeah, if you're the right Rik Faith I'd like to thank you for your
Linux work :-)
Nicolai
